Differences between travertine and marble

Natural stones such as travertine and marble are stone types that have been used since ancient times. Travertine is a porous natural stone formed by the precipitation of groundwater on the earth. Due to its structure, it is full of fossils and is porous. However, up to a certain extent, gaps do not cause serious problems and are not considered defects. Travertines can take colors such as gray, cream, yellow, brown and red depending on the minerals in the natural spring water.

Marble, on the other hand, is a type of rock formed by metamorphosis of limestone, dolomite and other carbonate compounds. Genuine marbles contain high amounts of calcium carbonate and small amounts of magnesium carbonate.

What are the Differences Between Travertine and Marble?

Although travertine and marble serve the same purpose, they have some differences. These differences emerge at the stages of use, design and implementation.

They can be used in almost all parts of living spaces such as travertine and marble countertops, tables and decorative items and offer an aesthetic appearance. However, travertine has a brighter, healthy and durable structure. Marble is one step ahead of travertine in terms of heat and coolness. For this reason, it is preferred in areas such as baths and kitchens.

Items of the same type made of travertine and marble can sometimes react differently depending on the space and design used. Natural stones such as travertine and marble, which are preferred in places such as gardens, pools and bathrooms, may show different durability periods depending on usage. While marble adapts to the platform in every aspect, travertine is not preferred for in-pool coatings with its porous and soft structure. However, it is as durable as marble in areas such as bathrooms and pool sides.

Travertine and Marble Care

While the marble surface requires maintenance and polishing at certain intervals, anti-slip and sealing applications must be made before installation of the travertine. Travertine does not need periodic maintenance. While marble is sensitive to acidic cleaners, travertine is resistant to chemicals. In addition, travertine is easier to process than marble and accepts polishing faster.

The price difference between travertine and marble is striking. Marble is generally more expensive than travertine, but the application cost of travertine is more economical. In some projects, the cost of travertine can be as low as half the price of marble.

There are also differences between the care of travertine and marble. While marble floor coverings require cleaning, polishing and polishing at certain intervals, the maintenance of the travertine is done during the assembly and installation phase. Travertine requires honing depending on the purpose of use and does not need any maintenance after assembly.
